Ive seen the Lord! Now he selects an inner circle of disciples to go with him, thus signaling the importance of the journey up the mountain. Either expression, as Stephen Farris points out in The Lectionary Commentary, could be the loose equivalent of saying about a week later. Yet, as Farris also suggests, in Lukes context the eighth day could be a prefigurement of the resurrection as well. Luke describes Peter as not knowing what he said (v. 33). At the base of the mountain, they find themselves confronted by a great crowd and a distraught father who pleads for his son, who is possessed by a demon. Peter, James, and John already believed in life after death, but surely this moment dramatically increased their convictions that everything they had been taught about life after death was absolutely true. To look on Gods face is to die (Exodus 33:20). Both incidents: (1) occur on a mountain (2) involve Moses (3) have God speaking from a cloud (4) speak of the glory of the Lord and (5) inspire fear. Listen to him! (9:29, 34-35). To twenty-first century ears, the symptoms sound like epilepsy. Though its hard for us to grasp what happened here when Moses and Elijah appeared, to see them would have been sort of a pledge to the disciples of their own immortality. In the Transfiguration, the earthly Jesus shares for a moment the company of two great and worthy residents of heaven, Moses and Elijah. In the Bible, mountains are synonymous with the majesty and dominion of God. 34While he said these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud. Jesus is in glory already, and they are with him. Hed come back a different man revived and ready to go back to work. This is the only Gospel to tell us what Moses and Elijah discuss with Jesus. Jesus understands our suffering because he suffered greatly in his days on the earth. From the very beginning there has been nothing about the appearance of Jesus that would cause you to think that he was anything more than just another boy, the son of a carpenter. WebLuke 9:28-36 Resume Prayer Some thoughts on today's scripture Jesus, like some of the key people in his Jewish faith, experiences a profound moment of encounter with God. First Reading. The face of the man walking with his child in the park, of a woman baking bread, of sometimes even the most unlikely person listen to a concert or standing barefoot in the sand watching the waves roll in, or just have a beer at a Saturday baseball game in July. Does your face glow with the light of Christ? They are happy to see Jesus glorified. Probably, he just wants to do something. God promises that the day will come when his glory will fill all the earth (Numbers 14:21). What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. Its something I think about only if Im watching a sci-fi movie. There may be another connection with Moses at this point. We know from Matthews and Marks Gospels Jesus told them to tell no one until after the resurrection. This recalls the story of Moses, who encountered God on Sinai as a devouring fire on the top of the mountain (Exodus 24:17) and whose face shone brightly by reason of his speaking with Yahweh (34:29). They were silent, and told no one in those days any of the things which they had seen. This is especially true for the writer of Luke. The second feature is that the disciples are said to have dozed off during that conversation, but saw the glorified Jesus and the two men with him (9:32). But on a different note: its always been a mystery to me how the disciples recognized Moses and Elijah. Each of the Synoptic Gospels contains an account of the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9//Mark 9:2-10 //Luke 9:28-36). They have been on mountains to receive revelation; they are expected to appear at the coming of the messianic age (see Deuteronomy 18:15 concerning Moses; Malachi 4:5 concerning Elijah); and both had been taken into heaven and thereby were privileged to know God face-to-face and to know his will. Often when someone dies they are said to have fallen asleep. Luke does not say that Jesus was actually transfigured (Greek metamorphthē), as in Mark and Matthew, but says only that his face was altered; along with the other two, however, he says that the clothing of Jesus became dazzling white. He is a royalty but He suffered a lot for our sins. So it is possible that this little detail on the timing of the Transfiguration could be a hint pointing toward Easter and the glory that awaited Jesus also then. And just like that, it was over. This cloud came over them and they heard a voice, God himself, speaking to them. One you try to capture with a camera. So his need for prayer may not have been that much different than ours. Biblical writers, attempting to describe Gods glory using human words, portrayed it as like devouring fire (Exodus 24:17). Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams, and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely (v. 39). Methinks, as I steal by His side, I hear from Him these plaintive sounds, "Lord, who hath believed Our report? The disciples are terrified because they understand the cloud as the presence of God. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen. Only the High Priest is allowed to come into Gods presenceand he only on the Day of Atonement (Hebrews 9:7). They were to do this that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. (1-9) The multitude miraculously fed. This event was unprecedented. We can read about that in Luke 22 just hours before the Crucifixion. May we meditate on the reality of this passage. There are many speculations why these two men appeared. Verse 28 links the Transfiguration to the preceding passage in which Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah and Jesus declares that he must suffer and die. Physically and literally, his body and even his clothing were changed. 38Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. Luke tells us that Peter did not know what he was saying, something which is quite evident. It has two features that are of interest for Lukes rendition. that he took with him Peter, John, and James (v. 28b). Yet we are told that for a time during this epiphany of glory, the disciples were sleepy! I admired him for that, and wished I could be a little more like him to break away periodically, disappear, go up on a mountain and spend time alone with God in prayer. Yes, the disciples themselves will suffer as they follow Jesus and proclaim him to the world. The disciples were bewildered. She laughed and said, Oh, he just needs a little time every once in a while to be alone with God. She said hed go backpacking on horseback in the mountains of New Mexico. Why should they have problems with this demon? The other gospels suggest that this took place six days later. Metamorphosis. I love Peter. Hope that Jesus is who he claims to be. If we have any skepticism in us, this story is so unusual I can understand how we might be skeptical and wonder, Did that really happen?. First, how in the world did the disciples come close to sleeping through this thing? An action-man needs to act! An analogy might be coming into contact with a live high-voltage electrical line. 30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: 31 Who appeared in glory, and There the new exodus takes place, the new event of redemption for all the world. WebMatthew 17:1-8. It is a fearful, terrifying thing to meet God in judgment. At the top of the mountain, they found themselves in the presence of God, who testified to the divine status of his son, Jesus. Commentators have wide speculation as to what Peter intended to stay. The model for this encounter is Moses at Sinai (Exodus 19-32). The event takes place about eight days later (9:28), rather than after six (Mark 9:2; Matt 17:1); there appears to be no particular significance for the change. But who can adequately translate those "strong cryings and tears?" 9:30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. Simply he may have not wanted the experience to end. The word glory is used in the Bible to speak of various wonderful thingsbut it is used especially to speak of Gods gloryan aura associated with Gods appearance that reveals Gods majesty to humans. The demon makes a desperate last attempt to control the boy. And there is more to it than simply an unforgettable moment. Metamorphosis is when an ugly, crawly creature like a caterpillar undergoes a complete transformation and comes out radically different. Incarnation and Transfiguration are antiphonal. Out of the group of 12 disciples, these three were ones Jesus focused even more on. Really carefully. What do we do with this? Indeed, by their very demeanor and words, they are actually tugging Jesus another direction! They are left with Jesus and silence. It took me a while to pick up on his pattern, and when I did, I asked his wife what was going on. But the disciples could have had no such visual associations with either Moses or Elijah. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was They promise us health, wealth, and happiness, but seldom live up to their promises and often lead people toward ruin. "It never entered thy thoughts to pay me the homageand yet I had helped thee, too, a littleof pouring oil on my head"; "but she hath anointed, not my head, she shrank, poor soul! It builds faith, that all weve been taught is absolutely true. A third possible reason for the Transfiguration: Just a week earlier, Jesus spoke hard words about his own suffering on the Cross, and the disciples suffering for his sake. We think it would be a cool experience to see God, perhaps like meeting a famous athlete or musician. We heard the story of Moses up on Mount Sinai. To be glorified here on the mountain, and to talk about his coming suffering in Jerusalem may have given the Lord Jesus strength for his days ahead strength facing this unimaginable human suffering. A rather literal translation would be that the disciples were weighed down with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory.. They dont tell anyone what they have seen, and that is all right. Representing the Israel of old, they disappear, leaving Jesus alone (Fitzmyer, 795). He is glorious in power and light and majesty and holiness. A cool one. His departure. All of that was to happen in and near Jerusalem. There was tangible evidence that the grave is not the end., J. Oswald Sanders, The Incomparable Christ. Mark 9:2-8. They want to camp out with him on the mountain. Moses received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai (Exodus 20:1-17). As persons who have been privy to the company and mind of God, they are able to provide Jesus with divine revelation. The first is that Luke alone provides the content of the conversation between Jesus, Moses, and Elijah (on which comment is made below). Luke 9 is no exception. Luke 9:28-36, Seeing Jesus Glory. His brilliance and majesty is so beyond us that we wont know what to do when confronted with him, and we will fall apart. Later, at Jesus ascension, a cloud will take Jesus out of their sight (Acts 1:9also written by Luke). Mark says they were afraid when Jesus was first glorified (Mark 9:6). This future glory of Christ when he comes again to earth soon is displayed for a short time on this mountaintop experience. Lazarus is described as having fallen asleep. Now, were tempted simply to think of this as a Kodak moment, one youd like to hold on to, that Peter was simply trying to concretize the experience and preserve it for all time. It is those two men who appear on the mountain with Jesus and his companions. In the Incarnation, the divine partakes of the human condition. But other times he swings at the pitch, completely whiffs, and strikes out. Listen to him.. Perhaps because Israel is the people of the Law and the Prophets, and Moses was the great lawgiver, and Elijah the great prophet. We see that yet today. "Complete Commentary on Luke 9:36". Only 3 disciples went with him. What is some significance for us today from these words here in Luke 9?? The scripture lessons from the Old and New Testaments this morning are like bookends. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. It 28. For most preachers, the decision is easy. God is not our Cosmic Buddy to whom we give the Bro handshake and hug. There is something so glorious about God and his kingdom that we will melt when confronted with it. The Transfiguration is a Christological festival in the church year, which means that the story of the Transfiguration deserves attention on its own. There will be a time to speak, but they are not yet ready for the witness that they will bear a few weeks later in Jerusalem (Acts 1-2). Action is both his strength and his weakness. The committee interviewed several candidates, and each made a positive impression. They confirm that this is the will of God for him. The disciples have survived their encounter with God! Prayer is a transfiguring, transforming duty, which makes the face to shine. If weve taken any biology class, weve heard of this word. But when we are resurrected, we will be imperishable we will never again have an expiration date! 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah. It lit up like a blazing light. daystar in my heart appear., Visit, then, this soul of mine; 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. That means there truly is life after the grave.
